Calvin Ridley Lost 15 Pounds in 24 Hours — Here's What Founders Can Learn From His Offseason Recovery

The Titans receiver's brutal stomach bug is a reminder that your most valuable asset isn't your product or your pipeline — it's your physical capacity to execute.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley had a rough offseason. A 24-hour stomach bug knocked him flat — and according to Ridley himself, he lost around 15 pounds in a single day.

'I've actually had that a couple of times in my life; maybe three or four times,' Ridley told reporters. 'It's not a good thing. It's like a 24-hour thing, but it really puts you down pretty good.'

Ridley, gearing up for his third season with the Titans, traced the episode back to a meal from a fast-casual Mexican chain — the kind known for burritos, burrito bowls, and customizable protein-and-rice combinations. He did not identify the chain by name, and it is worth noting that the outlet reached out to the company for comment. No chain has been linked to the Cyclospora incidents that have drawn national attention in recent weeks.

The founder angle nobody talks about

Elite athletes treat their bodies as operating infrastructure. When that infrastructure goes down — even for 24 hours — performance metrics crater. Ridley's 15-pound loss in a single day is a visceral data point.

Founders run the same risk and rarely account for it. You can have 18 months of runway, a full pipeline, and a product that converts — and one week of being physically wrecked erases the compounding advantage you spent months building. Decisions made while depleted are slower, riskier, and harder to reverse.

The math is simple. A 24-hour shutdown for a key decision-maker at a 10-person company is a 10% single-day productivity loss across the org — before you count the downstream drag on whatever that person was supposed to unblock.

What Ridley's playbook looks like in practice

Ridley didn't catastrophize. He acknowledged the bug, contextualized it ('not a good thing'), and moved on. That's the right operational posture: name the disruption, quantify it, and return to baseline without drama.

For founders, that means having a literal backup protocol before you need it. Who owns the Monday standup if you're down? Who has access to the cash report? Who can unblock the engineering team for 48 hours without a handoff call?

Start smaller than you think. One documented 'if I'm out' checklist per critical function. That's it. You don't need a COO to build it — you need 30 minutes and the discipline to share it with one other person.

Ridley is heading into his third season with the Titans. He'll be fine. The question is whether your company can say the same thing the next time the founder goes down — for 24 hours or otherwise.

Scale.'s read: Physical resilience isn't a wellness trend — it's an operational variable. The founders who build redundancy into their own role, not just their tech stack, are the ones who compound through the inevitable disruptions. Ridley lost 15 pounds in a day and showed up to camp anyway. Build the system that lets you do the same.
